Envoc Leverages Flexibility and Power of Microsoft Platform Ready for Azure in Smart Mobile App Development
Our mobile development toolset, AppMelt, needed rock-solid services behind its content delivery. Purchasing racks of servers, heaps of storage, and stacks of server licenses would have killed off the capital our small business built up for this effort. Further, our best work is in the .NET development, database, and document management world. Hiring and training IT systems engineers to care for a separate infrastructure was not the best use of hard-earned cash reserves.
By developing, testing, and committing to Microsoft Platform Ready (MPR) for Azure, we not only could work within Azure's platform-as-a-service framework, but through MPR, we had access to best practices, a local development environment that would mimic the production environment, and even marketing-related press releases that could jump-start our venture. In short, we didn't have to sell our small business soul to create an enterprise-grade mobile product.
Today, we are free from the worries of failing routers, firewalls, SANs, NICs, controllers, power supplies, and CPUs. Internet bandwidth and storage are virtually unlimited with Azure, so we know that when AppMelt takes off, there will be nothing about the infrastructure that will keep it from soaring.
Technology Innovations Group and Trove TMAP Implementation Takes Just 6 Months Thanks to Microsoft Platform Ready for Azure
Chief Technology Office/Chief Strategy Officer
Technology Innovations Group LLC
When we partnered with Trove Insights, we knew that the co-founders (Michael Simpson and Dr. Ron Young) had a fantastic idea and opportunity to positively impact companies and workers with their unique application of the TMAP personality test. Matching job candidates with ideals skills as well as personal attributes that would make them high performers for a given job or role sounded like a unique service and way to promote job growth with high personal satisfaction.
The challenge was that the current implementation was a Microsoft Access (database) and Visual Basic application written to run on a standalone desktop. Re-implementing the technology with verbal and written sources only (no source code or previous development team access) proved to be a challenge – but the upside was that we could implement the new platform in a scalable way as a true cloud service. Enter Microsoft Platform Ready (MPR) for Windows Azure.
I had utilized cloud services before. Early in the Amazon Web Services evolution, I had been an early beta tester of EC2 (Amazons cloud platform) and while it was very good, it was missing some key services, well integrated with the rest of the cloud as well as great developer tool integration. One such set of services Azure provided were SQL Azure, SQL Azure Reporting and the ACS(2) (third-party authentication) coupled with the Azure SDK and Visual Studio.
The Visual Studio system along with the Azure Developer kit offers a beginning–to-end way of developing a scalable cloud service that is well integrated, easy to develop and simple to deploy unlike the other offerings extant today. While there are great development tools, few one as were as well integrated as the Visual Studio tool set with Microsoft's Azure.
Coupled with the services, we were provided with great support and service from the Developer Platform and Evangelism team, in particular Greg Oliver and Tony Bailey. It was that combination of technology, tools and services afforded via MPR's develop, test and market framework that provided us with the confidence that we could implement our first true platform service on Azure in a scalable, reliable way servicing an increasing customer base for the near term and well into the future.
